How to Efficiently Use Public EV Chargers

When it comes to charging your electric vehicle, you have a few different options to choose from. The most common method is to plug in at home or work, but there are also public EV chargers that you can use for free.

Having worked for several years in environmental energy resources, we are proud to offer the highest quality EV charging installations; during this time, we have worked with EV chargers explicitly designed for the public. Our team have worked tirelessly to help educate and share our knowledge regarding public EV chargers; that is why we have written this latest blog post; read on to find out the best ways to use public chargers.

A Little More On Public EV Chargers

Public EV chargers are great for those who don’t have access to our charger or those who want to save time by charging outside our homes and offices. These chargers are typically located at malls, grocery stores, airports and other places where people spend time while they’re out and about. EV charging stations are one of the most efficient ways to power up your vehicle. They’re free, easy to use and can be found in various locations.

But the problem with public EV chargers is that they’re often used inefficiently. Many drivers will pull up and leave their cars plugged in indefinitely — even when their batteries are fully charged. This wastes electricity and prevents other drivers from efficiently using the available EV charger space.

Here are our top tips on how to efficiently use public EV chargers.

Public electric vehicle charging stations are becoming more common, but there are some things you should know before using them. The first thing to note is that not all-electric vehicles can use the same charger. The second thing is that not all chargers have the same capabilities. Some public chargers might only provide one or two hours of power per hour of charge time, while others may have a higher output and provide three or four hours per hour of charge time. If you don’t know what charger you’re using, your car could take longer than expected to charge fully.

It also helps if you know how long your car takes to charge at home so you can judge how much time it will take at a public station. For example, if it takes two hours at home and five hours at a public station — because the latter has a lower maximum output — then it would add an extra hour of driving time on top of what would be needed to get home from work anyway.

Read the signs – This sounds obvious, but many people just jump in and start using a charger before they know if it’s free or not. It’s best to keep an eye out for any signs that may indicate whether it’s free or not. If there are none, ask a nearby employee or someone already plugged in.

If there is no sign present, it’s best to stay away from that station until someone comes along and tells you otherwise.

Avoid peak times – If you’re planning on using an electric vehicle (EV) charger at a public location, it’s best to avoid rush hour and busy periods when possible. This is because the chargers can become congested during these times, and you may have to wait longer than usual for others. If you have time constraints such as work or school commitments, this may not be possible, but if you can try and avoid using chargers at busy times, you’re more likely to get a quicker charge from them.

Find free parking spots near the charger – If you’re driving a petrol or diesel car then it’s unlikely that parking will be an issue, but if you’re driving an electric vehicle, finding suitable parking near an EV charger may not always be easy. With this in mind, it’s worth checking for free parking spots beforehand so that once you’ve arrived at your destination.

Don’t park in front of an active charger – Even though these chargers are free for all to use, don’t take up an active spot for yourself if there is another one open behind you. If no other spots are available and you still need to charge your car, then park on the side of the parking lot instead so that other EV drivers can also take advantage of this.

Have a backup plan in case the station is complete. If all the spots at a charger are taken, don’t fret; just move on to another one nearby (or wait until someone leaves). However, if all of your backup options are full, too, it may be time to consider getting solar panels or an electrician so you can install your own charging station at home!
